PNG Begins Installing Automated Meter Reading Tech

Pacific Northern Gas (PNG) is implementing new meter reading technology for northeast customers, which will start in Tumbler Ridge this week.
The new tech will allow PNG to read meters remotely, which the company says “enhances convenience and saves customers money”.
The province’s Utilities Commission approved $4.2 million for the project in the fall, and the project was announced in December.
“The automated meter reading (AMR) technology will make it possible for PNG to collect meter reads using a drive-by system,” said Dominic Feenan, Director, Operations and Customer Service. “This will improve the safety and efficiency of meter reading and gas billing by eliminating the need for PNG to enter customer property each month to read meters located outside homes and businesses.”
The new system involves installing a device on a home or businesses existing meter. The encoder receiver transmitter then gathers consumption info and sends it to remote mobile data collectors. Once the reading is gathered, they are uploaded to the billing system.
After Tumbler Ridge, the company will head to Dawson Creek to install the AMR tech in March, and then Fort St. John and the surrounding area in the summer.
“Benefits of automated meter reading technology include improved billing accuracy and the elimination of estimated billing for properties that cannot be accessed due to locked gates, animals or weather. AMR is expected to result in cost savings over the life of the technology which will both cover the project cost and benefit PNG customers,” says PNG in a release on Feb. 5th.
Stratcom installers and vehicles will have identification indicating that they are contracted by PNG.
