Southwest metropolises look to address unusually high gas bills

Authorities in Chongqing and Chengdu, major cities in Southwest China, have taken steps to address residents' concerns about exorbitant gas bills, promising refunds and personnel changes. In recent months, residents in both cities took to social media to report unusually high gas bills, with some claiming their costs had increased significantly. Investigations were launched to find the cause of the discrepancies.

The installed base of smart gas meters in Europe reached 55.9 million in 2023, according to analyst house Berg Insights. This is equivalent to a penetration rate of 45 percent, it said. The number will grow at a compound annual rate (CAGR) of 6.8 percent by 2028, reaching 77.6 million units at the end of the period. Annual shipment volumes amounted to 4.8 million units in 2023 and will be around 5-5.8 million per annum through the forecast period.
